Conejo Valley Equine Rehabilitation grass paddocks

Equine Rehabilitation

Our equine rehabilitation program includes board, feeding of owner provided grain, daily grooming, stall cleaning 2 x daily, and turnout (as permitted by injury). We have both small paddocks and grass pasture available. Rehabilitation patients are monitored weekly with Equinosis Q system and veterinarian re-evaluation to see how they are tolerating increased workload. Upon entry we provide farrier radiographs to ensure the hoof angle is optimal for recovery or biomechanics soundness.

Tiers of Care

Every customized equine rehabilitation program includes the basics mentioned above. We offer three tiers of care, from basic layup to comprehensive treatment services custom designed to address the patient's unique needs. Each tier of care includes all features from the lower tiers.

Fitness and Conditioning

Our equine fitness and conditioning program focuses on optimizing fitness in our equine athletes to enhance performance and prevent injuries. Progressive exercise by our experienced training riders can be supplemented by treatment modalities like Pulsed Electromagnetic Therapy to help your horse achieve peak performance.

Services available

A broad range of treatments and services are selected for each horse based on their clinical history and injury or conditioning goals.

Conejoy Valley Equine Rehabilitation In Ground Aquatread

In Ground Aquatread

Our custom designed and built in ground aquatread has unparalleled features to assist with optimal conditioning or return to fitness.

The water level can be raised or lowered to any designated water level depending on the goal of the session. For example, deeper water may initially be used in rehabilitation causes to provide more buoyancy and decreased stress on tendon/ ligament injuries.  A conditioning patient may benefit from a lower water level to promote full range of motion of the joints and increased proprioceptive awareness.

The in-ground model promotes increased safety by allowing horses a safe escape up the ramp. Full range of motion is promoted through their back and topline by allowing a natural head carriage.

Saltwater Cold Spa

The Saltwater spa is an effective way to cool distal limbs to reduce swelling or aid in recovery. The water is optimally cooled to 35 F providing effective cryotherapy to deeper structures, not simply icing the skin.

This is an excellent treatment option to use post work or pre-laser treatment.

Additionally, it is very useful to aid in corrective farriery. As a part of all rehabilitation packages farrier x-rays and consultation are performed. The saltwater spa can aid in hoof growth, especially in our dry Southern California climate.

Conejoy Valley Equine Rehabilitation Equinosis Q

Equinosis Q

The Equinosis Q is a series of non-invasive inertial sensors that allow objective veterinary evaluation week after week. This is an amazing rehabilitation tool because it provides objective feedback about how a horse is progressing through the rehabilitation program. We always hope for a linear and progressive return to work, but effective rehabilitation requires frequent monitoring and re-evaluation of the plan. The Equinosis Q is utilized weekly to monitor how horses are adapting to progression of workload. If subtle lameness or asymmetry develops then the plan is re-evaluated.

Three sensors are attached to the horse - one on the poll, one on the right front limb, and one on the highest point of the pelvis. The Lameness Locator software can provide mathematical analysis of the gait pattern and identify subtle asymmetries in how the horse moves.

Sound Regenerative Laser Therapy (RLT)

The RLT is a laser unlike any other. The RLT delivers amazing results through short high energy pulses which penetrate energy deep in affected tissues and promote natural healing and prevent inelastic scar tissue formation.

This biggest enemy of healing is scar tissue, particularly with tendon and ligament injuries, because scar tissue is disorganized and inelastic. Tendons and ligaments are required to stretch and recoil to provide shock absorption and optimal function. Scar tissue is far more likely to be re-injured. The regenerative laser is utilized 3 x weekly to continually remind the body to bring in healing factors and  realign the tissue as it heals.

What sets our laser apart? All other class four cold lasers on the market are therapeutic - meaning they help the body heal the way it normally would - just faster. The regenerative laser prompts the body to bring in its own healing factors to heal in the most optimal way.

Equine Pulsed Electromagnetic Therapy (PEMF) treatment at Conejo Valley Equine

Pulsed Electromagnetic Therapy (PEMF)

Gentle electromagnetic pulses penetrate into tissues to alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and increase cellular metabolism through increased blood flow.

Healing is dependent on blood flow. The increased blood flow generated by the electromagnetic pulses aids the body in more efficient delivery of oxygen and nutrients and removal of waste products. This is also an excellent modality to use in conditioning cases to promote recovery of the muscles.

We have both the BEMER blanket and MagPro coils.

Rapid Release Therapy

RRT uses resonate frequency compression waves to relieve myofascial pain. RRT releases myofascial trigger points and knots while increasing circulation, relaxing muscles and releasing stress and tension.

This is incredibly useful for referred pain - meaning there may have been a primary injury elsewhere in the body but there is now a secondary source of pain due how the body was compensating. Unlike common muscle compression devices on the market, this technology uses faster and less depth vibration therapy to target the myofascial planes between muscle groups.
